Kybella™ is designed specifically to treat submental fat – the dreaded double chin. While traditionally this area has been treated surgically.

We understand that many factors out of your control, such as family genetics and aging, can cause a double chin. No matter how much you diet and exercise, that extra chin isn’t going anywhere. Before Kybella® was approved, the only good treatment option was surgical liposuction. Now, trained professionals finally have a noninvasive method with minimal side effects and little down time.

Dr. Pierone is the leading injector of Bellafill® in the United States and is a nationally recognized trainer and researcher. He has performed over 20,000 procedures with dermal fillers.

Kybella Introduction

How Does it Work?

Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, a substance found naturally occurring in the body, which is synthesized and then used to break down and absorb dietary fat. Kybella™ has been under development for more than 9 years, and has been the subject of over 20 clinical studies involving more than 2,600 patients.

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.” The result is a more streamline neck and improved contour along the jaw line.

Kybella vs. Liposuction

If you’re weighing the benefits of Kybella vs liposuction, here are some main points to keep in mind while making your decision.

A liposuction surgery is completed in a single visit. With Kybella, you might require a few treatments spaced out at least a month apart. But liposuction is surgery, so it’s a longer, harder recovery. Price-wise, Kybella might be a bit more expensive depending on the number of sessions you need, but both treatment methods are generally comparable.

But the best thing about Kybella is that it’s less invasive. You avoid all the negative issues involved with surgery, such as anesthesia and other risks associated with surgery, such as the risk of infection and longer downtime.

It’s important to note that Kybella can only be used for removal of fat under the chin. If you have loose skin in this area (“turkey neck”), Kybella can’t address that problem. If you have a double chin and saggy skin, liposuction might be a better choice for you, or you may want to consider one of our non-surgical skin tightening treatments, such as Ultherapy® .

What to Expect

During your initial appointment for a Kybella, you will meet with our trained staff to determine if treatment with Kybella will meet your aesthetic goals, and if you are a good candidate for such a treatment. If yes, you will go through a thorough history and physical examination, and discuss with you all of the different considerations that relate to treatment with Kybella, including the schedule of injections, since Kybella is usually not a single injection treatment.

The treatment itself is remarkably quick and easy to do, and recovery and downtime is minimal. This makes it one of the most exciting new options for patients looking to improve the appearance of their neck, chin and jawline without resorting to surgery.

Is it safe?

The safety profile of Kybella is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Kybella can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.2 These are not all of the possible side effects of Kybella. Call your healthcare provider for medical advice about side effects.

Will it work for me?

Anyone over 18, in good health with moderate-to-severe submental fat can reap the benefits of this aesthetic treatment. If your chin has a twin, and you’d like to improve its appearance without the risk of surgery – you’re the perfect choice for this exciting new procedure.

How many treatments will I need?

You and Dr. Pierone will customize your Kybella treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, your HCP will administer Kybella into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.

What's the downtime?

Kybella recovery is usually quick and uneventful. At most, patients report some minor bruising and swelling that resolves within several days. Mild discomfort may be experienced at the injection sites but is easily treated with OTC pain relievers. Some patients jump right back into their routine while others prefer to lay low for a couple of days after the procedure.

How long does it last?

When injected into the fat under your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with Kybella is not expected.
